We are growing in leaps and bounds!

Our 2 legged Mum says that she is very very sorry she hasn't kept up the blog... BUT our 2 legged Dad has had to go to Dubai for work and he did take the camera with him!

Our 2 legged Mum is very clever though... she has learned how to take our picture with her phone AND how to download it onto her computor.

She is also very busy working in the BIG CITY these past few weeks and then taking care of us 6 AND our other 5 big brothers & Sisters.

Mum says she'll do the best she can over the next week... we are getting ready to go to our new families!

Most of the puppies have blown out the weight scale.. it only weighs to 4 lb 7 oz... and all but puppy # 3 are now over that weight.

Today was also FIRST BATH DAY. It was a lovely warm day here in Melbourne and Dad decided it was time for a bath.

We did really well with our baths.. nobody freaked out and we all pretty much took it in our stride!

We are becoming much more vocal.. we certainly let everyone know when we are hungry!!

Our 2 legged Mum did sneak CARROTS into our pen today.. she told us they were just the same as chicken.. WE DISAGREE!

Still growing every day!

We have been so amazed with this litter.. they are unbelievably clean! Not once have they used their crate as a toilet!

They all toddle out of it and do their wee's and poo's on the paper!

We are STARVING .. we checked out our Mum's bowl and nothing.. so well all SANG for our supper!
Well.... our Mum is great.. our 2 legged mum that is.. she gave us something new... CHICKEN NECKS and we LOVED THEM!

5 of us have teeth.. only puppy #3 (Mum & dad calls him Scruffy!) doesn't have teeth yet.. but that certainly didn't stop him!

Weeks 5-8 What to Expect

Stage 3: The Overlap Stage 4-7

WeeksFrom 3-4 weeks the puppies begin the most critical socialdevelopment period of their life – they learn social interactionwith their littermates, learn how to play and learn bite inhibition.

They will also learn discipline at this point – Mom will begin weaning the pups around this time, and will start teaching them basic manners, including accepting her as the leader of the pack.We begin to introduce food to the pups starting around the4th week – transition gradually as Mom weans them.

We continue handling the pups daily, but don’t separate them from either Mom or litter mates for more than about 10 minutes per day. Puppies that are removed from the nest too early frequently are nervous, more prone to barking and biting and have a more difficult time with socialization and training. Puppies need to be left with Mom and siblings until at least 8 weeks of age - and preferably alittle longer - for optimum social development.

Experts say that the best time in a puppy’s life to learn social skills is between3 and 16 weeks of age – that’s the window of opportunity you have to make sure your puppy grows up to be a well-adjusted dog. It’s extremely important to leave the puppies with Mom and their littermates during as much of this period as possible.

We definitely don’t discipline for play fighting, housebreaking mistakes or mouthing – that’s all normal behaviour for a puppy at this stage.

5th to 7th Weeks: This must be considered as the third period in the puppy's life. The puppy will venture away from home, not very far, and do a little exploring. At the beginning of the 6th week, awareness of society will dawn. That is, the society of man and the society of the dog. The puppy's nervous system and trainability are developing and by the end of this critical period, will have developed to capacity.

During this third critical period, the puppies will learn to respond to voices and will begin to recognise people. It is during this period that a 'social pecking order" will be established among the puppies in the litter. Some of the puppies will learn to fight for food, they will be the bullies. The litter mates that are cowed by the aggressive tendencies of the others will become shy.

The scientific tests have shown that it is an advantage for a puppy to remain with the litter long enough to acquire a little competitive spirit. but that too much is detrimental to the puppy's emotional growth. Puppies that remain with litter mates after the eighth week will develop bullyish or cowed tendencies which will remain with them into adulthood.

The third critical period ends during the 7th week and the puppy is now considered emotionally developed and ready to learn. The training ability system within the dog is ripe and is operating to capacity. What it learns during the fourth critical period will be retained and become part of the personality and characteristic of the overall dog. If the puppy is left with the mother, its emotional development will be crippled. It will remain dependent upon her, but in her will find very little security since she will begin to totally ignore the pup.

If the puppy remains with the litter beyond this point, and without adequate human contact, its social adjustment will be learned from litter mates. The optimum time for taking a puppy into a new household is at the end of the seventh week and the beginning of the puppy's fourth critical period.

· Walks, plays, leaps, rolls and tumbles

· We try to subject the puppies to unusual stimuli such as other animals, children, vacuum cleaners, squeaky toys and any other stimuli available.

Week 3-4 - What to Expect

Stage 2: The Almost Ready To Meet The World Stage 3-4 Weeks

The Almost ready to meet the world stage lasts from 3 to about 4weeks, and puppies undergo rapid sensory development duringthis time. Fully alert to their environment, they’ll begin torecognize us and other family members.

It’s best to avoid loudnoises or sudden changes during this period – negative events canhave a serious impact on their personalities and development rightnow.

Puppies learn how to be a dog during this time, so it’sessential that they stay with mom and littermates.

21st to 28th Day:

During this period the puppy needs its mother more than any other time.
The brain and nervous system begin to develop. Awareness begins to take place, and, in this mental stage, a new puppy finds the world that surrounds it rather frightening. Things that happen can be frightening experiences.

A puppy removed from its mother during this second critical period will never attain the mental and emotional growth that it COULD and WOULD have, if it had been left alone. The social stress of being alive - and the awareness of it - has its greatest impact during this second critical period in the new puppy's life; that is, between the 3rd and 4th weeks.

It may seem peculiar to some that no other times in a dog's life presents the same proneness to such emotional upsets and that such upsets could have such a traumatic and permanent effect on the puppy's social attitudes.

It is during this second critical period in the new puppy's life that the characteristic of nervousness can generate shyness and other negative qualities in a puppy. Once adverse conditions have developed negative qualities in this second critical period, no amount of re-conditioning or training, later in life will alter or significantly modify the resultant negative characteristics.

Another day of FIRSTS...

Tonight we got our first dose of worming medicine... no, we did NOT like that! We also got our nails trimmed again, they sure grow fast!

Puppy #3 only received 1 Tube feeding today, we have decided to see how he does on his own over the next few days

He has been fighting the feeding tube every feeding, so this would indicate that he is getting stronger!

Tonight we went to feed him and he already had a tummy FULL of Mum's milk!

So, for tonight, we'll skip his tube feeding and see how he has done weight wise over night

Week 3 - What to expect

The Transitional Stage 2-3 Weeks

The Transitional stage generally lasts from age two to three weeks, and it’s during this time that the puppy’s eyes will open, and they will slowly start to respond to light and movement and sounds around them. They will become a little more mobile during this period, trying to get their feet underneath themselves and crawling around in the box. They will start to recognize mom and each of their littermates, and any objects we might place in the box.

Zero to 21 days: As a result of many years of scientific research it has been determined that the first critical period covers the entire first two weeks of the puppy's life. During this period the puppy's mental capacity is nearly zero, and the puppy reacts only to its needs of warmth, food, sleep and its mother.

Tests were conducted to determine whether a puppy was capable of learning anything at all during the first critical period, and it was determined that it was not. It was, however, determined that something nearly miraculous occurs on the 21st day, and that it occurs in all dogs, regardless of breed.

21st Day: On the 21st day. ALL of the puppy's senses begin to function. The senses were present in the puppy during the first critical period, but were dormant. The 21st day of the puppy's life is like an automatic switch that turns on. It also turns on the second and possibly the most important critical period in the puppy's life.

As you can see above he has gained a bit of weight. We are feeding him by tube straight into his tummy 4 - 6 times a day. He also has access to his Mum anytime he wants. The vet has given him a very good check over and we can't find anything wrong with him. So say some prayers that he is just a bit premature & sleepy.

This is the whelping area. the yellow pad in the corner is heated, so if the babies get cold they will crawl over to the heated pad.

There is a "sack" bed in front of the whelping box, Quinn can get away from the babies, yet is still able to watch them closely.

There is a mat in front of the sack bed if she wants to lay on the floor or she has the option of laying on the cool tiles.

She has lots of food and water anytime she wants it.

The whole area is surrounded by a wire pen, So that other dogs are not able to access the babies if they happen to get into the whelping area.

Well The time has come for our babies to get ready to go to their new homes.

While it will be a sad day, it is also a very happy one as these babies have been brought up the very best that we can, they have become wonderful little members of the family and now go on to bring their OWN families many many years of pleasure and happiness!

At 8 weeks of age is when we "analyze" the babies to decide which, if any, will go on to become one of our showdogs.

We have good news to report tonight!!

We have the results from the shows in Adelaide that our 2L mum took our 4L dad too!!!

Yesterday was the Keeshond Club of South Australia's Championship & Open Shows, well Dad did didn't do too well at the Championship show, BUT Uncle Hazard & Aunty Tayla, did well, they both got reserve best boy & girl.

Then at the open show, OUR 4L Dad, did us proud, he won Best Exhibit In Show, Uncle Hazard & Aunty Tayla, won reserve best boy and reserve best girl again.

Then today at the Adelaide Royal today, our 4L Dad did us might proud. Dad won Best of Breed!!

So it looks like you have to put up with dad doing the blog posts till she gets home.

Free at last! - FOOD AND SUSTANCE!!!

E X C U S E U S !! WE WANT to register a protest!! Mum goes away for the week and Dad just thinks he can take over!! HE LOCKED us in the crate while HE dared to clean our pen and mop the floor!! NOT only THAT but he also Vacumed while he has us CAPTURED in our crate. He Turned the Stereo Up and boy, can we sing! We's reckon we are louder than that stereo thing!

I'm STARVED, it must have been all that singing I did in the crate.

Time to play now, now that Dad has decided that we can be FREE again, it must have been our protesting that did it!

Nothing like cute lil fuzzy butts lining up at the food bowl.

If you are thinking, hey all these puppies seem to be doing is eating and sleeping, well guess what, you got that right :-) Besides eating and sleeping (which they do well cause they learnt it from their 4L dad) they also POOP!.

No weights again tonight, dad is tooo buggered to weigh us, he promises to weigh us in the morning for tomorrow nights blog.

Mum was tooo busy last night getting ready to go away to Adelaide Royal and the Keeshond Club of South Australia's Championship show with our 4L dad to post an update, so has left it to our 2L Dad to do..

We don't have good news to report today.

Late last night Puppy 1 - Male was taken to the emergency vet centre here and we are heartbroken to report that he has gone to the rainbow bridge.

At this time we do not know what the cause is, we have arranged a post mortum and we will report more details, when and if they come to hand.

This is one of the hardest parts of being a breeder.

We shed our tears and try to move on. It has been a very long day today.

It's moving day for us! our 2 legged mom decided that we are getting very messy in our box, so decided that it is time for us to begin to learn proper "potty"

We now have a lovely large pen to play in, and a crate to sleep in.

It will take some getting used to, but we'll get there!

This is our new bed!

This is where we start our crate training, a crate is just like a "den" and we soon learn that it is a place where we can go to rest and feel safe.

For the rest of our lives we will like the security of a crate and no matter where we go, if we have our crate with us, we also have our home!

We are really changing! We can hear very well now and our eyes are completely open! We respond to our 2 legged Mum and Dads voices!

Our 2 legged Mum, works from home, but had to go out to a meeting today and FORGOT to bring our MUM inside...... she was away from us for a few hours. This will explain our little bit of weight loss today. OUR 2 legged mum just about died when she realized what she had done! We make her feel very guilty! But we'll be just fine! We were sleeping quietly when she got back home!

We are sad to advise that the last born puppy (#6 - Male) has gone to the Rainbow Bridge.

He was very small at birth and while he gained a bit of weight in the first 24 hours, he was just not strong enough to thrive. Newborn puppies can go down hill so very fast.

As a rule, most babies will lose some weight in the 24 - 48 hours after they have been born.

We feed all our dogs Eagle Pack dog food and firmly believe that it is the excellent quality of this food that enables our babies to GAIN weight post birth!
